Hey. Bardon mentions in the theory section that one should not eat only one kind of food in the elemental analogy.
Now, we know the elemental analogies of foods, for example:
Fire - Spicy foods, maybe meat
Water - Fruits, vegetables, etc

But then what are the foods for air and earth?

Hi there!
I'm reading a book called "Healing with Forms, Energies and Light" (The Five Elements in Tibetan Shamanism, Tantra and Dzogchen) by Tenzil Rinpoche.
In it I found many interesting things about the Elements that are in accordance to what Bardon and Hermetics teach about them.
I will post an excerpt from the book. Be aware that for Akasha the author says Space.
If I'm allowed I can post link where you can download the book for free. Let me know if this is ok with the rules of this site?
Here is the excerpt:

THE FIVE PURE LIGHTS
The most subtle dimension of the five elements is known as the “five pure
lights.” In the Dzogchen tradition there are many texts of teachings about
the elements. From the Zhang Zhung Nyan Gyud, the primary cycle of
Dzogchen teachings in the Bön tradition, I am drawing from two main texts
which go into detail about the five lights. These are The Six Lamps (Sgronma
drug) and The Mirror of the Luminous Mind (‘Od-gsal sems-kyi melong).
One teaching, which is partially a story, explains how the elemental
energies, though always pure in themselves, come to be perceived as
substantial. It is also the story of how, in the intermediate state (bardo)
between death and birth, the individual goes toward either the delusions
of samsara or the freedom of nirvana. On another level, it is the description
of what can be done, in any moment, to end ensnarement in karmic
visions and remain in the natural state of mind. The teaching says something
like this:
For each of us, everything begins with the primordial space, the Great Mother
from which all things arise, in which all things exist, and into which all
things dissolve. In this space there is movement. What causes it, no one
knows. The teachings only say “the winds of karma moved.” This is the
movement of the subtlest level of lung or prana, the energy that pervades
infinite space without characteristics or divisions. Inseparably united with
the flow of prana is the flow of primordial awareness, pure and without
identity. In this pure awareness five lights arise.
The five lights are aspects of primordial luminosity. These are the five
pure lights, the most subtle level of the elements. We talk about the light
and color of the five pure lights but this is symbolic. The five pure lights are
more subtle than visible light, more subtle than anything perceived by the
eye, more subtle than any energy measured or perceived by any means.
They are the energies from which all other energies, including visible light,
arise.
The white or colorless light is space, the green light is air, the red light is
fire, the blue light is water, and the yellow light is earth. These are the five
aspects of pure luminosity, the rainbow-like energies of the single sphere of
existence (tigle nyag chik).
If the five lights are experienced dualistically, as objects of a perceiving
subject, they appear to grow more substantial. The five lights don’t become
grosser, but through the distortions of dualistic vision the individual perceives
them as grosser. As the elements seem to grow toward greater substantiality,
they are further discriminated, and through their interactions they
manifest all phenomena, including the subject and objects that make up all
dualistic experience.
Eventually the five lights become the raw, natural physical elements and
five inclusive categories of qualities belonging to external reality.
They become the different dimensions of existence that are various realms in which
beings with and without form exist. Internally the five lights seem to thicken
and form the organs, the five branches of the body, the five fingers of each
hand, the five toes of each foot, the five senses, and the five sense fields.
The five lights become the five negative emotions if we remain deluded, or
the five wisdoms and the five buddha families if we recognize their purity.
This is not a story about a creation that happened in the distant past. It is
about how we live as individual beings and about ignorance and enlightenment.
If the five lights are recognized as a non-dual, unceasing manifestation
of the pure basis of existence (kunzhi), nirvana begins. If the five lights
are perceived dualistically and thought to exist externally, as objects of a
subject, samsara begins. The awareness does not become delusory or become
enlightened—it remains non-dual and pure—but the qualities that
arise in it can be either positive or negative. If the awareness integrates and
identifies with the pure qualities, a buddha arises from the base; if with the
impure, a samsaric being arises. In this moment, right now, the process is
ongoing.
Depending on whether we integrate our immediate experience with nondual
awareness or cling to the false separation of our selves as subjects
experiencing external objects and entities, we will be in the non-dual natural
state or in the deluded mind.
The story of the five lights can teach us how to work with experience. What
manifests in experience usually begins on subtle levels and moves to grosser
ones. This is true for any process that leads to new things or new entities,
whether it’s the birth of an idea or the birth of a planet. The physical body of
an individual begins in desire that results in sex that brings two tiny cells
together that develop into the full human body. Language begins with pure
sound and leads to meaning and all the philosophies and poetry of humans.
Physicists tell us that the universe is born from energy condensed in a dimensionless
point, and a process of increasingly complex structures arise
as stars, planets, and organisms. Problems often begin from a misunderstanding
such as a difference in religious or political ideas and result in
arguments, life-long animosities, and even wars.
Karmic dispositions and conditioning determine the nature of the world
we inhabit: What we experience externally is a projection of what is internal.
This world is hell for some people, for others it is heaven.
Bön and Buddhist philosophy tell us that—beyond all these differences—
all things and beings are empty of inherent existence and are finally entirely
insubstantial. Modern physics agrees that matter is made of energy and space.
We can say that everything is insubstantial or empty, but of course, in
our experience things are substantial and separate. Stand in front of an oncoming
truck insisting that it is an insubstantial phenomenon and you’ll be
run over. But we must begin to change our minds about the condition of
phenomena. When we continue to react to experience as if it is made of
solid things and discrete substantial entities, the continuation of the ordinary
world is assured. This is not just abstract philosophy. If we react to our
problems as if they are real and solid, they are so, in our experience. But if
we recognize them to be fleeting and mirage-like, a display of the sacred
elemental energies in vast space, they are no longer problems.
Because the story of the five pure lights is not the story that science tells us,
it can be mistaken for fantasy, for something not true—by which is usually
meant that it is not fact. The five pure lights can’t be measured or weighed;
they aren’t facts in the way that a car is, or a rain storm. But facts are not
truth. The spiritual teachings continually point this out. While we accept it
as a fact that we exist surrounded by dead substantial things and living
substantial entities, the dharma tells us that there are no substantial things
nor are there separate, intrinsically existing entities. No one can show us
love as a fact, but when we are in love there is no doubt that love is real.
The five elements are true the way love is true and also the way a car is
true. A car is made from the elements: the hard earth of the metal, the water
of the gas and oil, the fire of the combustion, the air that allows the gas to
burn, and the space that allows the car to exist. Stop thinking of it as “car”
for a minute and instead see it as the interplay of the five elements. This is
how to think about the elements.
The story of the five lights and the stories later in the book are not meant
to entertain, nor should they be thought of as factual. Rather, this story is
truer than fact, and that’s why, if it is really understood, it can change the
way we experience the world. With a deep understanding of how the apparently
solid world is actually the play of pure elemental light, peace can be
found even in a troubled world, problems can be eradicated before they
manifest, and ultimately the nature of the mind can be fully realized. There
is a sequence or flow to all things that arise. Knowing this, one knows how
to stop negative processes and initiate and support positive processes.

IIH - Step 01 - Magic Mental Training
here is where it begins and i think probably one of the key steps - make sure this technique is close to perfect because this will be basically one of those fundamental techniques that if not adequately mastered, could hinder ones magickal growth.

basically, it's meditating 2x a day for 10 minutes. even by just doing this everyday in your life - can greatly benefit your existence.

1. thought control
- i can do this pretty well now.

2. discipline of thoughts
- see above

3. subordination of thoughts
a) control 10m/2x a day
- on a good day i can do 10 minutes no problem but since i'm doing this to basically level up, i will try for a more consistent ratio.

b) blank state & focus
- what you're trying to achieve, i do it separately. focus meditation on the morning and blank meditation at night. i do it this way since it's harder to do focus when you just woke up and blank when you're completely wired from work. am i a masochist by doing it this way? a wise grasshopper once said.....is the juice is worth the squeeze.....i couldn't resist. lol.

c) magickal diary
i started a blog.....

any comments would be much appreciated.

From Franz Bardon's book Initiation into Hermetics he speaks of four temperaments which corresponds to a persons personality. We are given The Choleric, Sanguine, Melancholic, and the Phlegmatic tempers. From the law of correspondence we can then turn them into or combine their symbolic meaning with that of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth. And even one step more with Will, Intellect, Emotions, and Consciousness. Now in step one of his book he gives little information which leaves a lot of thought in regards to a total understanding of the exact nature of this realm. I felt as such a positive aspect of will such as for instance Courageousness would have the opposite of cowardice in the negative spectrum of this emanation of Fire or choleric temper. I however do find myself jumping around from occult literature to make my perspective more full. I however came across a book titled the new hermetics of the 21st century and found related information on page 31. Its to a small degree a visual representation of the four temperaments and shows the relation to how fire and water are connected and opposite of each other as are air and earth opposites of each other and connected. This information I am for the most part familiar with and is but another symbolic meaning stacked on the ones I already mentioned. But what was surprising and a bit contradicting was the relations of the elements to this extra symbolic addition. First off I realized that if any of positive fire traits was made exactly opposite then it would not be a negative fire trait but rather a negative water one. And the same was true for the water traits or any trait for that matter. Any Positive water trait made opposite becomes a negative fire trait. For me I find this information to be different from what I have come across so far and am left with two different views on the personality of man. Well I do have some doubts in regards to my source because personally I feel this new book seems to diminish the discipline, structure, and spiritual nature of Initiation into hermetics but do understand that truth is truth regardless. I created an account on here in what felt like less then a minute and posted this so that I could get creative or insightful feedback.

IleMacedonia on "The three minds"

I'm going again through step 1 exercises and I have some experiences that I want to share here with you about the very first exercise OOM - observing of the mind.
I noticed that in the psyche of a man there is a three minds. The first mind is a mind which I've called "self-flowing mind". Mind in which thoughts are not controlled, they come and go without our willed controling.
The second mind is the "controlling mind." Mind who controlled the thoughts with our will.
The third mind is "Observing mind." Mind that do nothing. This mind doesn't think (the thinker is the second - the controlling mind), mind that only look what is there. The third mind is our self. Our-self doesn't need words, therefore neither thinking, only observing. Looking not Thinking!
So, here are the functions of the three minds:
1. Flowing (thoughts come and go)
2. Thinking (this mind look in to the first mind, but also he's thinking and controlling, this mind needs logic. He choose what to do, and what to think and not think. This mind is drive by the will).
3. Looking (This mind only look what is there, he dosn't think about it. He sees and let go)
Howerever, I think that Bardon says to observe the first - self-flowing mind, with the third - observing mind(our-self).

This is an excerpt from a much longer essay/book...

"To understand magic, is to gain fundamental insight to what reality and real is. If you think our very existence is reality, I am here to burst your bubble. Nothing we see or hear is real, it is the result of our perception and the illusion of the mind.
To put it in another word, all experiences are in the realm of the subject-object problem, a longstanding philosophical issue, is concerned with the analysis of human experience, and of what within experience is "subjective" and what is "objective". The subject-object problem is twofold: firstly, there is the question of "what" do we know, and very recently this could be called the "Matrix" question, i.e., "How do we know we are not living in a "matrix"?
The second problem is that of "how" do we know what we know? Surely, are person with a mental disease has a sense of reality that is quite different from the norm. How do we know who is right?
Therefore in the absolute esoteric sense, all that we know and think as real, is in fact an illusion. Precisely because it is observed by limited faculties i.e. the subject-object human brain and secondly, all that we think of real is finite and perishable. One second it exist then it is gone. Is that real for you? The sec-ond might last a few million light years but that is only quibbling over time.
Our universe is finite, all within the universe is finite. We are, as mortals, and naturally are finite, we all die one day. Nothing is real except Infinity, i.e. God.
Therefore working with this illusion as a magician must be quite easy - all matter vibrates and moves around in a varying speed. Nothing is solid, at the sub atomic level - an atom is mostly empty space. All is malleable and can be controlled as all is the creation of our mind. The workings of the universe as we know it, are the result of our super conscious, the collective mind. The Universe is emanated from Infinity i.e. God having all the innate divine characteristics present but in some ways only a mirror image of the "real thing".

What makes things feel solid when in fact everything is space?
To understand why my hand did not stick to my keyboard as I was typing this chapter, you have to understand why and how atoms combine.
Each atom has electrons revolving around it. The number varies depending on the element. There are different levels of elec-trons, too. The inner most level can only contain up to two electrons, all of the other levels can contain up to 8. Some of them are positively charged some of the negatively, hence repel each other offering the illusion of solid state.
If our reality is a dream, i.e. an illusion then it must be concluded that altering this dream must be relatively easy and without technical difficulties. It is all doable.
The biggest obstacle for any person who wishes to become a magician is the first step of understanding the mechanics and the background of reality, and our mind. To accept fully this paradigm is not easy. Even at the point of accepting the premise of this many subconsciously fail to believe it fully and integrate this truth into his conscious and subconscious mind. This can take time.
The second idea in understanding of magic is the knowledge and acceptance of our septenary existence. We have access to these seven levels, at all times, only one level of this seven is on this physical, material plane. The rest is invisible to the human eye.
•	Realm of God. (Infinity)	7th
•	Realm of Virgin Spirits. (angels)	6th
•	Realm of Divine Spirit. (higher beings, Mahatmas) 5th
•	Realm of Life Spirit. (This is the Chi, Life force, prana etc.)
•	Realm of Thought. 3rd
•	Desire Realm. (Where we spend time between incarna-tions, Astral) 2nd
•	Physical Realm.	1st
There are different names and even different numbers of these levels are described in various teachings. Since demarcation is not very strong between these levels, it is best not to quibble with Sanskrit names and numbers. I have tried to pre-sent the best description of these levels to a novice.
We are simultaneously exist on all seven levels but aware-ness of the higher levels is blocked by our limited mind. After all we purportedly use 10-20-percent mind capacity and our cen-ters are usually closed/blocked. These centers are also exist in seven and correspond to our seven levels of being. There are 3-lower centers and 3-higher centers and there in the middle is the heart center.
At the two highest levels of Realms, the quantum mechanics and molecular physics do not apply, the vibration level of this existence is so high that it renders normal physics useless, the laws of these simply do not apply. At this level we are One, this explains how remote healing can be performed by a Healer.
Since time and space no longer forming obstacles while acting on these levels, all contact and knowledge is possible of the seemingly separated fragmented "others" on the lower planes.
Using a top/down approach a Healer can heal the "other" per-son's astral body first which facilitates overall healing for the physical body."

In the first step of IIH, Bardon recomends morning exercises but didn't explain what kind of exercises to do. He left that exercises on individual choice. Everyone can choose what is better for him.
What kind of exercises do you practice?

First post in this forum? Wow! Better make it good then!

There is a doubt I´ve been having for some time now regarding the very first step of the first step in mental training... It says that we should "observe our train of thought". I don´t know if it is a writing or translation problem (and english is only my second language), but I found it a little difficult to grasp this full meaning.

We should think of nothing in particular and wait for thoughts to happen? And when they happen, should we ignore them to let some other thought arrive? Its something like zapping channels on the TV and trying to remember what was on on every channel? (Sorry for the bad mundane analogy, hehe).

Anyway, that is what I´ve been starting to do (since the book arrived 3 or 4 days ago), and I really want to know if I´m starting with the right foot!

Peace Profound!

I am new to the list. I studied Franz Bardons teaching under the tutelage of William Cook Edwards in the 80's. I have been running study groups since the early 90's.
I live mostly in Australia, Gold Coast, but I am enjoying time in Japan at present.
I look forward to some interesting conversations on the forum.

Hello,

Just a quick blurb, I found the occult (or perhaps it's more appropriate to say it found me) about a year an a half ago. I've been stumbling around with High Magick for a bit and in my travels ran into IIH. After putting it off for about 7 months, I've finally decided to roll up my sleeves and jump in. I'm doing thought control right now, mostly concentrating on one though. I usually have pretty good success unless ... I have music stuck in my head. It's odd, I can hear something in a coffee shop earlier in the day and it just jumps in and relentlessly assaults me when trying to defer my thoughts to something else. Are there any tricks other than sheer willpower to purge stuff like that?

Hi everyone, I've come here to discuss/get advice on Franz Bardon's "Initiation into Hermetics." I found out about it sometime around this time last year. I read the theory and started the practice, but then I had too much stuff going on (work, school, etc.) and didn't get too much done in the first step and stopped. I tried again earlier this year and I got to the part where I could concentrate on one thing at a time. I tried it, but couldn't really figure it out. I then decided to take a break for a day, then that day turned into a week, then a month, now several months.

Now I'm ready to start again, and this time there's no breaks!

Once again it's nice too meet you all and hope you guys accept me here.

Hi,
It is my great pleasure to have found this forum. I am new to bardon but not new to the occult. Prior, I have had a yoga teacher whom I meditated with in a group, before I had an unfortunate fallout with him. After some interlude I am happy to found a way to move on, now I consider myself the disciple of Bardon. Interestingly, during my 3 years with the yoga teacher (which by the way not a physical form of yoga but more of a mental, spiritual practice) I have found almost all aspects concordance with bardon's theories and teachings, WITHOUT the needed practical advice and regiment to follow.
In the olden days the when the aspirant wanted to learn about the mysteries of the Universe, he had to find a Guru or attempt to join a mystery school. Either way the course of learning always included several steps of initiations as he moved foreward in leaning. Now, this is not available, as real Gurus or mystery schools do no exist. However, the next best thing is available, the Bardon Self-Initiation course.
I consider that I could enter to phase II of my training and begin the practical side. If there is anything you need for me in aspects of theories of karma, reincarnation or other stuff, please ask away. I will not bother posting essays or preaching to show off.

I was practicing step 1 about one month and then decide to go on step 2. But as I trained the mental exercises of step 2 I noticed that I'm not as good in concentration and decide to go back and repeat step 1. Do you have some similar experience? How do you know when you can go on the next step?
However, Bardon says that 10 minutes is a minimal period to reached the final point of the practice and then you can go on the next(mental)step. I have reached that ultimatum but only once or twice and then I move to the step 2. I think that it is better to establish the time of 10 minutes, lets say, in a period of one week in which you will always be able to make concentration of 10 minutes. And than go to the next step.
What are your opinions about this?

My name is Alex. I recently purchased all three of Bardons books concerning progression and Hermeticism. I have started Initiation into Hermetics about a month ago... I keep a journal and everything. I joined this to meet others who have mastered the works and also those who are working towards that goal.
I have been involved in the occult for a few years, yet have never really gotten really involved in practice and personal development. That all changed when I got IIH. I hope I can get some advice and benifit from the site. Thank you all and good luck on your own paths. :)

Although not feeling ready, I have been yearning and very excited to start it. Somewhat of a strange feeling of ready to go but held back. The time has come and would love your feedback here for fellow students.

Hollo discusses many aspects of hermeticism, including exile, language, archetype, religion, and writers who have led a hermetic life.
He also discusses Alchemy, Arabian roots of math and science, and some Buddhist concepts.

The second in a pair of workshops by Anselm Hollo on hermeticism. Hollo discusses historical versus private hermeticism, and historical hermeticism in philosophy, religion and heresy. He also discusses a number of writers in terms of hermeticism, including Charles Olson, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce and Gertrude Stein. At the end of the class the students read and discuss their work.

Every night before going to bed, you light an incense and turn the lights off, then you have to sit on the floor with your legs crossed and your wrists hanging over your knees (if this is too difficult just sit on a chair with you wrists hanging over your knees), don't avoid the pain but accept it and be part of it.
Take a few deep breaths (3 to 4 times inhaling and exhaling slowly).
!The room must be completely dark!
Now you have to focus on the glowing top of the incense, do this for 10 minutes,
every time a thought comes up in your mind you have to close your eyes quickly and open them again focusing on the glowing top of the incense.
After finishing this exercise take a few deep breaths, slowly stand up and turn the lights on.

This is a good exercise while you read the theoretical part of IIH
